Lesson plans on language and linguistics in K-12 education
For this exercise students will learn to identify adjectives. They will then creatively generate adjectives to complete a story.
MADLIBS: A lesson in Adjectives
Objectives:
• Gain an understanding of parts of speech (specifically adjectives)
• Make grammar more fun at the elementary level
Time: 30 minutes
Materials:
• Adjective worksheet
• Adjective specific madlibs
• Overhead projector
Procedure:
(Set up: print the madlibs on overhead film; print adjective worksheets for students)
1. Teach an overview of what an adjective is (“an adjective is a description word….”
2. Have the class generate a list of adjectives together.
3. Look at sentences from whatever book the class is reading at the time of this lesson and have them find the adjectives (together as a class).
4. Have the students complete the individual worksheet.
5. Ask the students for adjectives to complete the madlib (do not turn the overhead on until the entire madlib is completed.
Evaluation:
The individual worksheet will help you gauge the students’ understanding of adjectives as well as their writing skills.
